A vulnerability has been found in Joomla CMS up to 3.7.x (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component LDAP Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a ldap injection vulnerability (Password). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-90. The product constructs all or part of an LDAP query using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended LDAP query when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In Joomla! before 3.8.0, inadequate escaping in the LDAP authentication plugin can result in a disclosure of a username and password.

The bug was discovered 07/27/2017. The weakness was released 09/20/2017 by Johannes Dahse (Website). The advisory is available at developer.joomla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-14596 since 09/19/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 54 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103383 (Joomla! 1.5.0 < 3.8.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11863 (Joomla! Core LDAP Information Disclosure Vulnerability [20170902]).

Upgrading to version 3.8.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
