A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.28/2.6.9 (Operating System). This issue affects the function ip_options_get
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the vc_resize function in the Linux kernel 2.4 and 2.6 before 2.6.10 allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel crash) via a short new screen value, which leads to a buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 12/15/2004. The weakness was presented 12/15/2004 by Georgi Guninski (Website). The advisory is shared at guninski.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-1333 since 01/06/2005. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at guninski.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20450 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2005:219)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18523), Tenable (20450) and Exploit-DB (690). derkeiler.com is providing further details. See 1071, 1072, 1103 and 1478 for similar entries.
