of the file coffcode.h of the component libbfd. The manipulation as part of a File Descriptor leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The coff_slurp_line_table function in coffcode.h in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.29.1, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid memory access and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted PE file.
The bug was discovered 11/01/2017. The weakness was presented 11/15/2017 as Bug 22376 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-16826 since 11/15/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
