OpenSSL up to 1.0.2m Error State SSL_do_handshake Application 7pk error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.2m (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function SSL_do_handshake of the component Error State Handler. The manipulation as part of a Application leads to a 7pk error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-388. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

OpenSSL 1.0.2 (starting from version 1.0.2b) introduced an "error state" mechanism. The intent was that if a fatal error occurred during a handshake then OpenSSL would move into the error state and would immediately fail if you attempted to continue the handshake. This works as designed for the explicit handshake functions (SSL_do_handshake(), SSL_accept() and SSL_connect()), however due to a bug it does not work correctly if SSL_read() or SSL_write() is called directly. In that scenario, if the handshake fails then a fatal error will be returned in the initial function call. If SSL_read()/SSL_write() is subsequently called by the application for the same SSL object then it will succeed and the data is passed without being decrypted/encrypted directly from the SSL/TLS record layer. In order to exploit this issue an application bug would have to be present that resulted in a call to SSL_read()/SSL_write() being issued after having already received a fatal error. OpenSSL version 1.0.2b-1.0.2m are affected. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.0.2n. OpenSSL 1.1.0 is not affected.

The bug was discovered 12/07/2017. The weakness was disclosed 12/07/2017 as 20171207.txt as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-3737 since 12/16/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/17/2023).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105341 (openSUSE Security Update : openssl (openSUSE-2017-1381)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38753 (NetApp Clustered Data ONTAP Multiple Vulnerabilities (NTAP-20171208-0001,NTAP-20180201-0001,NTAP-20171107-0002)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.2n eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (105341).
