Cisco NX-OS IPv6 Neighbor Table Processor input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Cisco NX-OS (Router Operating System) (affected version unknown). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component IPv6 Neighbor Table Processor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The IPv6 implementation in Cisco NX-OS does not properly handle neighbor-table adjacencies, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NS processing outage) via a series of malformed packets, aka Bug ID CSCtd15904.

The weakness was presented 11/12/2013 as Cisco Nexus 4000 Series Switches IPv6 Denial of Service Vulnerability as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tools.cisco.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-6683 since 11/07/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack can only be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71153 (Cisco Nexus 4000 Series Switches IPv6 Denial of Service (CSCtd15904)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71153), SecurityFocus (BID 63685†), OSVDB (99749†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42356†). Further details are available at tools.cisco.com. See VDB-193657, VDB-193658, VDB-207285 and VDB-221622 for similar entries.
