A vulnerability has been found in Google Chrome 31.0.1650.57 (Web Browser) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function Runtime_TypedArrayInitialize of the file runtime.cc of the component Array Length Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. Multiple buffer overflows in runtime.cc in Google V8 before 3.22.24.7, as used in Google Chrome before 31.0.1650.63, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors that trigger a large typed array, related to the (1) Runtime_TypedArrayInitialize and (2) Runtime_TypedArrayInitializeFromArrayLike functions.

The weakness was published 11/15/2013 by Jakob Kummerow (Cloudfuzzer) with Chromium Development Community as 319722 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-6638 since 11/05/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/02/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74869 (openSUSE Security Update : v8 (openSUSE-SU-2013:1960-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166599 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Chromium (openSUSE-SU-2013:1927-1)).

Upgrading to version 31.0.1650.63 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
