A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in libvirt 1.1.1/1.1.2/1.1.3/1.1.4/1.2.0 (Virtualization Software). This issue affects the function virDomainPtr
in the library domain:gettatr of the component ACL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
libvirt 1.1.1 through 1.2.0 allows context-dependent attackers to bypass the domain:getattr and connect:search_domains restrictions in ACLs and obtain sensitive domain object information via a request to the (1) virConnectDomainEventRegister and (2) virConnectDomainEventRegisterAny functions in the event registration API.
The weakness was shared 01/15/2014 by Eric Blake with Red Hat as event: filter global events by domain:getattr ACL as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at libvirt.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0028 since 12/03/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72232 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 12.10 / 13.10 : libvirt vulnerabilities (USN-2093-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123338 (Fedora Security Update for libvirt (FEDORA-2015-1883)).
Upgrading to version 1.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at libvirt.org. Applying the patch 1.2.1 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at libvirt.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
