A vulnerability was found in Sun Java JRE and SDK up to 1.5.0_01-b08 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component 8dot3 File Name Handler. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
Sun Java JRE 1.1.x through 1.4.x writes temporary files with long filenames that become predictable on a file system that uses 8.3 style short names, which allows remote attackers to write arbitrary files to known locations and facilitates the exploitation of vulnerabilities in applications that rely on unpredictable file names.
The bug was discovered 07/06/2004. The weakness was shared 02/09/2005 by Andreas Sandblad with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secunia.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0471 since 02/18/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 218 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sun.com.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19285), OSVDB (13620†), Secunia (SA11070†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22118†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
