pki-core Package up to 10.6.3 CMC Authentication Plugin hard-coded credentials

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in pki-core Package up to 10.6.3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component CMC Authentication Plugin. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a hard-coded credentials vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-798. The product contains hard-coded credentials, such as a password or cryptographic key, which it uses for its own inbound authentication, outbound communication to external components, or encryption of internal data. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

It was found that a mock CMC authentication plugin with a hardcoded secret was accidentally enabled by default in the pki-core package before 10.6.4. An attacker could potentially use this flaw to bypass the regular authentication process and trick the CA server into issuing certificates.

The bug was discovered 08/02/2017. The weakness was presented 07/26/2018 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-7537 since 04/05/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1110.001.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103022 (EulerOS 2.0 SP2 : pki-core (EulerOS-SA-2017-1184)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Huawei Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157526 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for pki-core (ELSA-2017-2335)).

Upgrading to version 10.6.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (103022).
