The issue has been introduced in 04/12/2011. The weakness was released 03/11/2014 by Bo Qu and Yujie Wen with Palo Alto Networks as MS14-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0321 since 12/03/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1064 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72930 (MS14-012: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2925418)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100180 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS14-012)).
