A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in GNU binutils 2.31 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this issue is the function d_name/d_encoding/d_local_name
of the file cp-demangle.c of the component GNU libiberty. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in cp-demangle.c in GNU libiberty, as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.31. There is a stack consumption vulnerability resulting from infinite recursion in the functions d_name(), d_encoding(), and d_local_name() in cp-demangle.c. Remote attackers could leverage this vulnerability to cause a denial-of-service via an ELF file, as demonstrated by nm.
The bug was discovered 10/22/2018. The weakness was published 10/28/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at gcc.gnu.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-18700 since 10/27/2018. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277638 (Fedora Security Update for binutils (FEDORA-2019-ba3cbcfd20)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
