FreeBSD up to 10.0 nfsserver resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD up to 10.0 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown processing of the component nfsserver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The NFS server (nfsserver) in FreeBSD 8.3 through 10.0 does not acquire locks in the proper order when converting a directory file handle to a vnode, which allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (deadlock) via vectors involving a thread that uses the correct locking order.

The weakness was presented 04/08/2014 by Rick Macklem as FreeBSD-SA-14:05 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at security.FreeBSD.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1453 since 01/14/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Required for exploitation is a authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

The Network File System (NFS) allows a host to export some or all of its file systems so that other hosts can access them over the network and mount them as if they were on local disks. FreeBSD includes both server and client implementations of NFS. The kernel holds a lock over the source directory vnode while trying to convert the target directory file handle to a vnode, which needs to be returned with the lock held, too. This order may be in violation of normal lock order, which in conjunction with other threads that grab locks in the right order, constitutes a deadlock condition because no thread can proceed.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74374 (Debian DSA-2952-1 : kfreebsd-9 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The advisory illustrates:

To determine which implementation an NFS server is running, run the following command: "kldstat -v | grep -cw nfsd"

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at security.FreeBSD.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Systems that do not provide NFS services are not vulnerable. Neither are systems that do but use the old NFS implementation, which is the default in FreeBSD 8.x.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92605) and Tenable (74374). See 13104 and 13483 for similar entries.
