FreeBSD 8.3/8.4/9.1/9.2/10.0 TCP Reassembly memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in FreeBSD 8.3/8.4/9.1/9.2/10.0 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown function of the component TCP Reassembly Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The TCP reassembly function in the inet module in FreeBSD 8.3 before p16, 8.4 before p9, 9.1 before p12, 9.2 before p5, and 10.0 before p2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (undefined memory access and system crash) or possibly read system memory via multiple crafted packets, related to moving a reassemble queue entry to the segment list when the queue is full.

The weakness was shared 04/30/2014 by Jonathan Looney as FreeBSD-SA-14:08.tcp as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at freebsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-3000 since 04/25/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

FreeBSD may add a reassemble queue entry on the stack into the segment list when the reassembly queue reaches its limit. The memory from the stack is undefined after the function returns. Subsequent iterations of the reassembly function will attempt to access this entry.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74374 (Debian DSA-2952-1 : kfreebsd-9 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.

Applying the patch SA-14:08 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at security.FreeBSD.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

It is possible to defend to these attacks by doing traffic normalization using a firewall. This can be done by including the following /etc/pf.conf configuration: scrub in all
Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16254.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92976) and Tenable (74374). The entries 12858 and 13483 are related to this item.
