Apple iOS up to 7.1.1 Email Attachment MobileMail.app cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 7.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file MobileMail.app of the component Email Attachment Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.

The weakness was presented 04/23/2014 by Andreas Kurtz as What Apple Missed to Fix in iOS 7.1.1 as not defined blog post (Website). The advisory is shared for download at andreas-kurtz.de. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-1348 since 01/08/2014. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600. The advisory points out:

(...) I shut down the device and accessed the file system using well-known techniques (DFU mode, custom ramdisk, SSH over usbmux). Finally, I mounted the iOS data partition and navigated to the actual email folder. Within this folder, I found all attachments accessible without any encryption/restriction.

A public exploit has been developed by Andreas Kurtz in Shell and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at andreas-kurtz.de. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The code used by the exploit is:

# mount_hfs /dev/disk0s1s2 /mnt2
# cd /mnt2/mobile/Library/Mail/

# xxd IMAP-MY_MAILADDRESS/INBOX.imapmbox/Attachments/4/2/my_file.pdf
