When mount.ecrpytfs_private before version 87-0ubuntu1.2 calls setreuid() it doesn't also set the effective group id. So when it creates the new version, mtab.tmp, it's created with the group id of the user running mount.ecryptfs_private.
The bug was discovered 08/23/2011. The weakness was released 04/22/2019 by Dan Rosenberg. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-3145 since 08/16/2011. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1211.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68338 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : ecryptfs-utils (ELSA-2011-1241)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119656 (CentOS Security Update for eCryptfs (CESA-2011:1241)).
Upgrading to version 87-0ubuntu1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
