Acme Labs PerlCal up to 2.95 cal_make.pl p0 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Acme Labs PerlCal up to 2.95 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the file cal_make.pl. The manipulation of the argument p0 with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in cal_make.pl in PerlCal allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the p0 parameter.

The weakness was presented 06/27/2001 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2001-0463. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10664 (PerlCal cal_make.pl p0 Parameter Traversal Arbitrary File Read), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10867 (PerlCal Directory Traversal Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 2.96 eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1474. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 883.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6480) and Tenable (10664). See 27415 for similar entry.
