A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function sendmsg
. The manipulation of the argument msg_control
with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the sendmsg function call in the Linux kernel 2.6 before 2.6.13.1 allows local users execute arbitrary code by calling sendmsg and modifying the message contents in another thread.
The bug was discovered 09/09/2005. The weakness was presented 09/09/2005 by Alexander Viro with Red Hat as RHSA-2005:514 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2490 since 08/08/2005. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20466 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2005:235)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117852 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:663)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22217), Tenable (20466), SecurityFocus (BID 14785†), OSVDB (19260†) and Secunia (SA16747†). See VDB-1234, VDB-1561, VDB-1592 and VDB-1681 for similar entries.
