A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Cisco IP Phone, IOS and PIX Firewall (Router Operating System) (version now known). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Session Initiation Protocol. The manipulation as part of a INVITE Message leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) implementation in multiple Cisco products including IP Phone models 7940 and 7960, IOS versions in the 12.2 train, and Secure PIX 5.2.9 to 6.2.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted INVITE messages, as demonstrated by the OUSPG PROTOS c07-sip test suite.
The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2003 with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-1109 since 03/11/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
