Cisco IP Phone/IOS/PIX Firewall Session Initiation Protocol INVITE Message memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Cisco IP Phone, IOS and PIX Firewall (Router Operating System) (version now known). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Session Initiation Protocol. The manipulation as part of a INVITE Message leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) implementation in multiple Cisco products including IP Phone models 7940 and 7960, IOS versions in the 12.2 train, and Secure PIX 5.2.9 to 6.2.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted INVITE messages, as demonstrated by the OUSPG PROTOS c07-sip test suite.

The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2003 with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-1109 since 03/11/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48969 (Multiple Product Vulnerabilities Found by PROTOS SIP Test Suite - Cisco Systems), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2821.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11379) and Tenable (48969). The entries 21096, 21098, 21099 and 21100 are pretty similar.
