Linux Kernel 2.6.16 Netfilter SCTP HB-ACK Chunk Parameter race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Netfilter. The manipulation as part of a SCTP HB-ACK Chunk Parameter leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Race condition in the do_add_counters function in netfilter for Linux kernel 2.6.16 allows local users with CAP_NET_ADMIN capabilities to read kernel memory by triggering the race condition in a way that produces a size value that is inconsistent with allocated memory, which leads to a buffer over-read in IPT_ENTRY_ITERATE.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 05/22/2006 by Solar Designer with Linux Kernel Team (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0039 since 12/20/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 60 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27886 (Ubuntu 5.04 / 5.10 / 6.06 LTS : linux-source-2.6.10/-2.6.12/-2.6.15 vulnerabilities (USN-311-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156246 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2006:0617, ELSA-2006:0689)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26583) and Tenable (27886). The entries 2256, 2255, 2257 and 2379 are related to this item.
