The weakness was shared 07/13/2005 by Matthew Mastracci (moz_bug_r_a4) as MFSA2005-49 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-2264 since 07/13/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21949 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2005:586)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117887 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2005:586)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3377.
