A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Avi Alkalay contribute.cgi 16 Jun 2002 (Multimedia Processing Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file contribute.cgi/contribute.pl. The manipulation of the argument contribdir
with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in Avi Alkalay contribute.cgi (aka contribute.pl), dated 16 Jun 2002, allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via ".." sequences in the contribdir variable.
The bug was discovered 09/12/2005. The weakness was disclosed 09/12/2005 by Sullo (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cirt.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3097 since 09/28/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
After 2 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19780 (Alkalay.Net Multiple Scripts Arbitrary Command Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
