MyBB 1.0 calendar.php rating sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in MyBB 1.0 (Content Management System). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file calendar.php. The manipulation of the argument rating with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in MyBulletinBoard (MyBB) before 1.0 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the (1) month, (2) day, and (3) year parameters in an addevent action in calendar.php; (4) threadmode and (5) showcodebuttons in an options action in usercp.php; (6) list parameter in an editlists action to usercp.php; (7) rating parameter in a rate action in member.php; and (8) rating parameter in either showthread.php or ratethread.php.

The bug was discovered 11/07/2005. The weakness was disclosed 12/09/2005 by Tobias Klein with trapkit.de (Website). The advisory is available at trapkit.de. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-4199 since 12/13/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 32 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:calendar.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20342 (MyBB calendar.php 'month' Parameter SQLi), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23610) and Tenable (20342). The entries 27443, 83442 and 83443 are pretty similar.
