Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.6 ImageIO _cg_tiffsetfield denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.6 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function _cg_tiffsetfield of the component ImageIO. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in the _cg_TIFFSetField function in Mac OS X 10.4.6 and earlier, as used in applications that use ImageIO or AppKit, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted TIFF image that triggers a null dereference.

The bug was discovered 04/19/2006. The weakness was presented 04/21/2006 by Brent Simmons (McAfee) with McAfee AVERT Labs (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1984 since 04/21/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21341 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115357 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-05-11)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 33605.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25950) and Tenable (21341). See 27361, 26531, 30222 and 30221 for similar entries.
