Linux Kernel up to 2.6.17.2 ip_conntrack_proto_sctp.c resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). Affected is an unknown part of the file ip_conntrack_proto_sctp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

SCTP conntrack (ip_conntrack_proto_sctp.c) in netfilter for Linux kernel 2.6.17 before 2.6.17.3 and 2.6.16 before 2.6.16.23 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a packet without any chunks, which causes a variable to contain an invalid value that is later used to dereference a pointer.

The bug was discovered 06/30/2006. The weakness was shared 06/30/2006 by George A. Theall as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-2934 since 06/09/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 102 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27910 (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS : linux-source-2.6.15 vulnerabilities (USN-331-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165140 (SUSE Security Update for kernel (SUSE-SA:2006:042)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.17 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 7021. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12326.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (31547) and Tenable (27910). The entries 2224, 2326, 2360 and 2476 are related to this item.
