SCTP conntrack (ip_conntrack_proto_sctp.c) in netfilter for Linux kernel 2.6.17 before 2.6.17.3 and 2.6.16 before 2.6.16.23 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a packet without any chunks, which causes a variable to contain an invalid value that is later used to dereference a pointer.
The bug was discovered 06/30/2006. The weakness was shared 06/30/2006 by George A. Theall as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-2934 since 06/09/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 102 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27910 (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS : linux-source-2.6.15 vulnerabilities (USN-331-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165140 (SUSE Security Update for kernel (SUSE-SA:2006:042)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.17 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 7021. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12326.
