BrightStor ARCserve Backup memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in BrightStor ARCserve Backup (Backup Software) (the affected version is unknown). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in the LGServer component of CA (Computer Associates) BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Laptops and Desktops r11.1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted arguments to the (1) rxsAddNewUser, (2) rxsSetUserInfo, (3) rxsRenameUser, (4) rxsSetMessageLogSettings, (5) rxsExportData, (6) rxsSetServerOptions, (7) rxsRenameFile, (8) rxsACIManageSend, (9) rxsExportUser, (10) rxsImportUser, (11) rxsMoveUserData, (12) rxsUseLicenseIni, (13) rxsLicGetSiteId, (14) rxsGetLogFileNames, (15) rxsGetBackupLog, (16) rxsBackupComplete, (17) rxsSetDataProtectionSecurityData, (18) rxsSetDefaultConfigName, (19) rxsGetMessageLogSettings, (20) rxsHWDiskGetTotal, (21) rxsHWDiskGetFree, (22) rxsGetSubDirs, (23) rxsGetServerDBPathName, (24) rxsSetServerOptions, (25) rxsDeleteFile, (26) rxsACIManageSend, (27) rxcReadBackupSetList, (28) rxcWriteConfigInfo, (29) rxcSetAssetManagement, (30) rxcWriteFileListForRestore, (31) rxcReadSaveSetProfile, (32) rxcInitSaveSetProfile, (33) rxcAddSaveSetNextAppList, (34) rxcAddSaveSetNextFilesPathList, (35) rxcAddNextBackupSetIncWildCard, (36) rxcGetRevisions, (37) rxrAddMovedUser, (38) rxrSetClientVersion, or (39) rxsSetDataGrowthScheduleAndFilter commands.

The bug was discovered 06/04/2007. The weakness was disclosed 06/11/2007 by Sean Larsson with eEye (Website). The advisory is shared for download at research.eeye.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-3216 since 06/14/2007. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69317 (CA ARCserve Backup for Laptops and Desktops Server and CA Desktop Management Suite Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370648 (CA ARCserve Backup for Laptops and Desktops Server Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).

The best possible mitigation is suggested to be disabling the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12786. In this case the pattern rxsSetDataGrowthScheduleAndFilter is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5676.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34805) and Tenable (69317). The entries 39039, 39038, 39037 and 39036 are pretty similar.
