A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.20/2.6.21 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component ptrace. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Linux kernel 2.6.20 and 2.6.21 does not properly handle an invalid LDT segment selector in %cs (the xcs field) during ptrace single-step operations, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL dereference and OOPS) via certain code that makes ptrace PTRACE_SETREGS and PTRACE_SINGLESTEP requests, related to the TRACE_IRQS_ON function, and possibly related to the arch_ptrace function.
The bug was discovered 07/15/2007. The weakness was published 09/25/2007 by Evan Teran as Bug 8765 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3731 since 07/12/2007. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 224 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28123 (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS / 6.10 / 7.04 : linux-source-2.6.15, linux-source-2.6.17, linux-source-2.6.20 vulnerabilities (USN-518-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156026 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2007-0940)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugzilla.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36681) and Tenable (28123). Similar entries are available at 37923, 37590, 39393 and 39392.
