OpenLDAP prior 2.1.30-r10 gencert.sh symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenLDAP (Directory Service Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file gencert.sh. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The gencert.sh script, when installing OpenLDAP before 2.1.30-r10, 2.2.x before 2.2.28-r7, and 2.3.x before 2.3.30-r2 as an ebuild in Gentoo Linux, does not create temporary directories in /tmp securely during emerge, which allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack.

The bug was discovered 01/23/2007. The weakness was published 01/23/2007 by Tavis Ormandy (LINUX) with Gentoo Linux (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0476 since 01/24/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24255 (GLSA-200701-19 : OpenLDAP: Insecure usage of /tmp during installation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 2.1.30-r10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (24255).
