Apple QuickTime up to 7.3 RTSP Content-Type Header memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Apple QuickTime (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component RTSP Handler. The manipulation as part of a Content-Type Header leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.3.1, as used in QuickTime Player on Windows XP and Safari on Mac OS X, allows remote Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) servers to execute arbitrary code via an RTSP response with a long Content-Type header.

The bug was discovered 11/23/2007. The weakness was released 11/26/2007 by Krystian Kloskowski (h07) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-6166 since 11/28/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/11/2024).

A public exploit has been developed by krafty and been published 8 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31383 (GLSA-200803-08 : Win32 binary codecs: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115666 (Apple QuickTime RTSP Content-Type Header Buffer Overflow).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at exploit-db.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12741. In this case the pattern RTSP is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5812.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38604), Exploit-DB (6013), Zero-Day.cz (402), Tenable (31383) and SecurityFocus (BID 26560†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-2530, VDB-3440, VDB-3515 and VDB-3514.
