Microsoft Windows IGMPv3/MLDv2 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The kernel in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, and Server 2003, when ICMP Router Discovery Protocol (RDP) is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via fragmented router advertisement ICMP packets that trigger an out-of-bounds read, aka "Windows Kernel TCP/IP/ICMP Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 01/08/2008 by Alex Wheeler and Ryan Smith with X-Force as MS08-001 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-0066 since 01/04/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 04/27/2019).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29893 (MS08-001: Vulnerabilities in Windows TCP/IP Could Allow Remote Code Execution (941644)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90423 (TCP/IP Vulnerabilities on Windows Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS08-001)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-001 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 14 hours after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (39254) and Tenable (29893). Similar entries are available at 3541 and 40416.
