A vulnerability has been found in Ruby 1.8.5/1.8.6 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function net::ftptls
of the component Libraries. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
The (1) Net::ftptls, (2) Net::telnets, (3) Net::imap, (4) Net::pop, and (5) Net::smtp libraries in Ruby 1.8.5 and 1.8.6 do not verify that the commonName (CN) field in a server certificate matches the domain name in a request sent over SSL, which makes it easier for remote attackers to intercept SSL transmissions via a man-in-the-middle attack or spoofed web site, different components than CVE-2007-5162.
The bug was discovered 11/01/2007. The weakness was presented 11/13/2007 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-5770 since 11/01/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 37552 (CentOS 4 : ruby (CESA-2007:0961)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155989 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Ruby (ELSA-2007-0961)).
