The bug was discovered 02/12/2008. The weakness was presented 02/12/2008 by Shaun Colley with NGSSoftware (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0103 since 01/07/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3172 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31047 (MS08-013: Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (947108)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110069 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-013)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
