Apple Mac OS X cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in SquirrelMail before 1.4.18 and NaSMail before 1.7 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via vectors involving (1) certain encrypted strings in e-mail headers, related to contrib/decrypt_headers.php; (2) PHP_SELF; and (3) the query string (aka QUERY_STRING).

The bug was discovered 05/09/2009. The weakness was released 06/16/2010 by Tomas Hoger with Apple as HT4188 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-1578 since 05/06/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38776 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : squirrelmail (squirrelmail-6242)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155919 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for SquirrelMail (ELSA-2009-1066)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50459) and Tenable (38776). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 48291, 48184, 48183 and 48182.
