Google Chrome 7.x memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
4.8$0-$5k0.00

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Google Chrome 7.x (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

libxml2 before 2.7.8, as used in Google Chrome before 7.0.517.44, Apple Safari 5.0.2 and earlier, and other products, reads from invalid memory locations during processing of malformed XPath expressions, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted XML document.

The weakness was shared 11/04/2010 with Verschiedene (siehe Google Advisory für Details) (Website). The advisory is available at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-4008 since 10/20/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/18/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70884 (ESXi 5.0 < Build 764879 Multiple Vulnerabilities (remote check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216039 (VMWare ESXi 4.0.0 Patch Release ESXi400-201209001 Missing (KB2019662)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (70884).
