Linux Kernel 2.6.33 CLONE_IO io_context input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.33 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function io_context of the component CLONE_IO. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The I/O implementation for block devices in the Linux kernel before 2.6.33 does not properly handle the CLONE_IO feature, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (I/O instability) by starting multiple processes that share an I/O context.

The issue has been introduced in 02/24/2010. The weakness was shared 12/04/2009 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0879 since 01/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68515 (Oracle Linux 6 : kernel (ELSA-2012-0481)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156319 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel Security, Bug Fix and Enhancement Update (ELSA-2012-0481)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.33 rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73424) and Tenable (68515). Additional details are provided at comments.gmane.org. The entries 4672 and 4958 are related to this item.
