The layout engine in Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.7, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.21, and SeaMonkey 1.1.15 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via certain vectors that trigger memory corruption and assertion failures.

The bug was discovered 03/04/2009. The weakness was published 03/04/2009 by Georgi Guninski (TippingPoint) with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0771 since 03/03/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36866 (Fedora 10 : Miro-2.0-4.fc10 / blam-1.8.5-7.fc10 / devhelp-0.22-5.fc10 / epiphany-2.24.3-3.fc10 / etc (2009-2422)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155946 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Firefox (ELSA-2009-0315)).

Upgrading to version 2.0.0.19 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6222.
