HP Network Node Manager 7.5.1 ov.dll memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in HP Network Node Manager 7.5.1. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block in the library ov.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in OvCgi/Toolbar.exe in HP OpenView Network Node Manager (OV NNM) 7.01, 7.51, and 7.53 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a long OvAcceptLang cookie, which triggers the error in ov.dll and ovwww.dll, or (2) a long Accept-Language HTTP header, which triggers the error in ovwww.dll or libovwww.so.4.

The bug was discovered 01/21/2009. The weakness was released 03/24/2009 by CORE Security with CORE Security Technologies (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0921 since 03/16/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 62 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43360 (HP-UX PHSS_39639 : HP OpenView Network Node Manager (OV NNM), Remote Execution of Arbitrary Code (HPSBMA02416 SSRT090008 rev.5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42016 (HP OpenView Network Node Manager Multiple Remote Execution of Arbitrary Code).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6906.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49363) and Tenable (43360). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 3944, 46362, 46361 and 46360.
