Open redirect vulnerability in wp-admin/upgrade.php in WordPress, probably 2.6.x, allows remote attackers to redirect users to arbitrary web sites and conduct phishing attacks via a URL in the backto parameter.
The weakness was published 12/22/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-6762 since 04/28/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
By approaching the search of inurl:wp-admin/upgrade.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44736 (Debian DSA-1871-1 : wordpress - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116578 (Debian Update for WordPress (DSA-1871-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
