Bitweaver up to 2.6 saveFeed code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Bitweaver up to 2.6 (Content Management System). This issue affects the function saveFeed. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple static code injection vulnerabilities in the saveFeed function in rss/feedcreator.class.php in Bitweaver 2.6 and earlier allow (1) remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary PHP code into files by placing PHP sequences into the account s "display name" setting and then invoking boards/boards_rss.php, and might allow (2) remote attackers to inject arbitrary PHP code into files via the HTTP Host header in a request to boards/boards_rss.php.

The weakness was presented 05/18/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1677 since 05/18/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by Nine:Situations:Group and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50631) and Exploit-DB (8659). See VDB-48234 for similar entry.
