MIT Kerberos 5-1.7/5-1.7.1/5-1.8 Key Distribution Center input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.7/5-1.7.1/5-1.8 (Network Authentication Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Key Distribution Center. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Key Distribution Center (KDC) in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) 1.7 before 1.7.2, and 1.8 alpha, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon crash) via an invalid (1) AS-REQ or (2) TGS-REQ request.

The weakness was disclosed 02/22/2010 by Emmanuel Bouillon with NATO C3 Agency (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0283 since 01/12/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45571 (FreeBSD : krb5 -- multiple denial of service vulnerabilities (9ac0f9c4-492b-11df-83fb-0015587e2cc1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165243 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:005)).

Upgrading to version 5-1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9566.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (45571). The entries 51778, 51153, 51041 and 50972 are pretty similar.
