The edit_cmd function in crontab.c in (1) cronie before 1.4.4 and (2) Vixie cron (vixie-cron) allows local users to change the modification times of arbitrary files, and consequently cause a denial of service, via a symlink attack on a temporary file in the /tmp directory.
The weakness was published 02/25/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 565809 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-0424. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68475 (Oracle Linux 5 : vixie-cron (ELSA-2012-0304)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165236 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:007)).
Upgrading to version 1.4.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
