Apple Mac OS X up to 10.6.2 AFP Server path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.6.2 (Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component AFP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in AFP Server in Apple Mac OS X before 10.6.3 allows remote attackers to list a share root s parent directory, and read and modify files in that directory, via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 03/30/2010 by Patrik Karlsson (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-0533. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45374 (AFP Server Directory Traversal), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117331 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2010-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2010-03-29-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (45374). The entries 48954, 48189, 49430 and 52475 are pretty similar.
