Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Office Excel 2002 SP3, Office 2004 for Mac, Office 2008 for Mac, and Open XML File Format Converter for Mac allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Excel file with a malformed SxView (0xB0) record, aka "Excel Record Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-0824 and CVE-2010-0821.
The weakness was disclosed 06/08/2010 by Nicolas Joly with VUPEN (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-1245. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/15/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Abysssec and been published 5 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50066 (MS10-038: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2027452) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110124 (Microsoft Office Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS10-038)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9847.
