A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apple Safari up to 4.0.5 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in the (a) Local Storage and (b) Web SQL database implementations in WebKit in Apple Safari before 5.0 on Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.6 and Windows, and before 4.1 on Mac OS X 10.4, allow remote attackers to create arbitrary database files via vectors involving a (1) %2f and .. (dot dot) or (2) %5c and .. (dot dot) in a URL.
The weakness was published 06/11/2010 by Masahiro Yamada (TippingPoint) with Context Information Security (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-1391. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/15/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46837 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 5.0 / 4.1), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118090 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (HT4196)).
