Apple QuickTime up to 7.7.1 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
7.0$0-$5k0.00

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.7.1 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.2 on Windows allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted TeXML file.

The bug was discovered 05/15/2012. The weakness was released 05/15/2012 by Alexander Gavrun with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. The public release was coordinated with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0663 since 01/12/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802795 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120221 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1)).

Upgrading to version 7.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12405.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75638) and Tenable (802795). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 5399, 5404, 5408 and 5409.
