Quagga up to 0.99.16 null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

bgpd in Quagga before 0.99.17 does not properly parse AS paths, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via an unknown AS type in an AS path attribute in a BGP UPDATE message.

The weakness was disclosed 09/10/2010 as Bug 626795 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-2949 since 08/04/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49121 (Debian DSA-2104-1 : quagga - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155499 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Quagga (ELSA-2010-0945)).

Upgrading to version 0.98.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (49121). The entry 54686 is pretty similar.
