A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This issue affects the function eql_g_master_cfg
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The eql_g_master_cfg function in drivers/net/eql.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc5 does not properly initialize a certain structure member, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via an EQL_GETMASTRCFG ioctl call.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 09/30/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3297 since 09/13/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1655 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50825 (Debian DSA-2126-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165610 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 SP3 Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:044)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (50825). Similar entries are available at 55569, 55564, 55563 and 55559.
