The snd_hdspm_hwdep_ioctl function in sound/pci/rme9652/hdspm.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc6 does not initialize a certain structure, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via an SNDRV_HDSPM_IOCTL_GET_CONFIG_INFO ioctl call.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 11/30/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 648670 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-4081. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1716 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50825 (Debian DSA-2126-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165622 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:060)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
