Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9 insertRow Deleted Object code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 9 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing a deleted object, aka "insertRow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 06/12/2012 by Roman Shafigullin with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MS12-037 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1880 since 03/22/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59455 (MS12-037: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2699988)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100116 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-037)).

Applying the patch MS12-037 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12382.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75960) and Tenable (59455). Additional details are provided at support.microsoft.com. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 5514, 5515, 5516 and 5517.
