A vulnerability was found in Linux-PAM. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function run_coprocess of the file pam_xauth.c of the component pam_xauth. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

The run_coprocess function in pam_xauth.c in the pam_xauth module in Linux-PAM (aka pam) before 1.1.2 does not check the return values of the setuid, setgid, and setgroups system calls, which might allow local users to read arbitrary files by executing a program that relies on the pam_xauth PAM check.

The weakness was disclosed 01/24/2011 as Bug 637898 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3316 since 09/13/2010. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68144 (Oracle Linux 6 : pam (ELSA-2010-0891)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119031 (VMware ESX SLPD Denial of Service Vulnerability and Security Update for Third-Party Components (VMSA-2011-0004)).

Upgrading to version 0.99.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (68144). The entries 56223, 56222, 56216 and 56215 are pretty similar.
