Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.0.1 handle_gdt_ldt_mapping_fault denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Foundation Xen (Virtualization Software). This vulnerability affects the function handle_gdt_ldt_mapping_fault. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The fixup_page_fault function in arch/x86/traps.c in Xen 4.0.1 and earlier on 64-bit platforms, when paravirtualization is enabled, does not verify that kernel mode is used to call the handle_gdt_ldt_mapping_fault function, which allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (host OS BUG_ON) via a crafted memory access.

The weakness was shared 01/24/2011 as Bug 658155 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-4255. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51522 (RHEL 5 : kernel (RHSA-2011:0017)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118912 (Red Hat Update for Kernel (RHSA-2011:0017)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (51522), SecurityFocus (BID 45099†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29187†). The entries VDB-56205, VDB-56094 and VDB-55859 are related to this item.
